Paripi Koumei/Ya Boy Kongming! drama finale extremely brief almost-4am thoughts.

I'M NOT EVEN MAD ABOUT THEM DOING THIS TO ME. IT HURT SO GOOD. I LOVED IT OH MY GODDDDDD.

It's the middle of the night and I should be sleeping, but I have no self control so when I saw this was available I needed to watch it immediately. Summer Sonia plan has its bumps but everything works out. Eiko and Maria sing together, everything is AWESOME for everyone who isn't Keiji and the show has 10 mins to go and yayyyy!

But then Kongming is drawn back to that meeting with Liu Bei they've been blue balling us with all series and he realises:

Cue Kongming and Owner having a heartfelt conversation in a way only two middle-aged men who converse exclusively through Three Kingdoms lore can.

Obviously the exact details are kind of skewed, but Kobayashi has previously suggested Kongming's dreams are calling to him so he can accept that Kongming has to go and lets him. Eiko is performing and doesn't realise any of this is going on. Later that night at the BB Lounge she thanks Kongming and he gives her his final pep talk.

But can't bring himself to say he thinks he's going back to being dead or whatever, so he holds back tears and Eiko just goes about like :D before singing upon Kongming's request without realising he sees this as the final performance of hers he'll ever witness. FLASHBACK TO ALL THE GOOD TIMES. SHOW WHY YOU DO THIS. HE BEGINS WALKING TOWARDS LIU BEI...

Cut to everyone else coming in for the evening's celebrations as Eiko is performing, Kongming lets everyone step in front of him until he disappears behind the crowd...

Outside the club Kobayashi (who has been escorting KABEtaijin) suddenly looks up at a shooting star in the sky and silently mouths "Kongming."

KABE and Kobayashi head inside, everyone is celebrating and it's super cute.

Kobayashi looks around for Kongming but can't see him so heads behind the bar. Then Eiko, oblivious Eiko WHO HAS HAD NO IDEA WHATSOEVER THAT ANY OF THIS WAS HAPPENING, can't see Kongming anywhere either! She calls out for him, asks Owner but he says he hasn't seen him... Kongming is just... gone...

She looks everywhere for Kongming, calling his name....

😭😭😭

... and then she finds him in front of the mirror in the back room crying but IT'S OK BECAUSE HE'S.STILL.HERE.

He didn't die on the way back to his home planet like Poochie! He's stuck in Shibuya using Paypay like everyone else! MASSIVE MASSIVE FAKE OUT JUST TO TOY WITH EVERYONE'S FEELINGS IN THE FINAL 10 MINUTES OF THE SHOW OH MY GOD.

But I'm not mad because it got me good. I was like 😭 at every turn, then he just doesn't go and it's like y'know what? That's cool. I'M JUST GLAD HE'S HERE OK.

The problem with the idea of sending Kongming "back" is that, well, he died in the past. The first thing he does in the present is check his pulse and he's alive now, so given he's not a ghostly presence or anything there isn't any real "going back" to be had for Kongming imho. He's just some ojii-san in the city now and I couldn't ask for more. He did finally make peace with the presence of Liu Bei and his failures in the past, now he's purely living that Shibuya life and the drama is entirely open to a movie or sequel.

The ratings weren't great so I'm not sure that will happen, but I am just truly happy that we got these 10 episodes of television. The production values were high, the cast were excellent and the writing fleshed out the manga story beautifully. The whole concept is absolutely absurd and these last couple of episodes felt somwhat rushed, but the drama approaches everything so earnestly that it's hard not to get swept up in it all.

So now I have to go try and sleep without dwelling on all the sad Kongming faces I just had to endure.

Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 2 - honestly if this show sticks the landing, it may become my favorite anime of all time. it's just the best week to week viewing experience. my jaw lives on the floor. and i spend at least half an hour after every episode debating ethics with my friends. amazing.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (6 anime)

samurai champloo - music! animation! episodic storytelling! STYLE! this anime just has style

ranking of kings - most loveable anime characters of all time. classic fantasy setting. stripped down for honest and charming character storytelling. hilling is best girl of the season FIGHT ME

Golden Kamuy - slow start and then POW. perfect shonen story in an atypical setting. juggles a large cast of characters with competing motivations expertly so you can never predict the twists and turns. criminally underrated

Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song - managed to make me - a known hater of ai/robot stories - glue my eyes to the screen for 3 days. tons of heart and fun storytelling.

Odd Taxi - this is a novel come to life. some of the best dialogue in anime history.

Kotaro Lives Alone - cutest anime child of all time must be protected

princess jellyfish - kind of the pinnacle of a generation of shoujo for me

yona of the dawn - tbh i can't remember if i watched this last year or in 2022 but anyway it's great. gripping stuff. the lack of season 2 is criminal and i'm gonna have to collect the manga smh

kaguya-sama love is war season 3 - continued great direction, gimmicks, and jokes

ya boy, kongming! - the shock of the season. somehow this is actually funny and the rap parts are genuinely powerful. i didn't know anime could do music this well tbh

the devil is a part-timer season 1 - had fun watching but nothing sticks with me

parasyte - truly ambitious, gripping sci-fi that doesn't spoonfeed you answers but examines a dilemma from every angle

banana fish - high stakes international thriller with a diverse cast and a gary stu at the helm

darling in the franxx - the not quite as good cousin of evangelion, interested in pubescent sexuality in big robots. major points for bonkers ambition. i was stunned with what it was trying to do.

spy x family - that little girl really is cute

space patrol luluco - studio trigger on speed with 7 min episodes

the tatami galaxy - smart, stylish, creative use of the medium.

made in abyss season 1 - a classic hero's journey to confront the unknown and come back forever changed

btooom! - prisoners' dilemma with explosions

demon slayer season 2 - i liked that guy with a bunch of wives and the bad guys

black lagoon - peak 90s anime

moriarty the patriot season 1 - no one told me moriarty is a righteous socialist antihero. it's fun.

theatre of darkness: yamishibai - horror vignettes in 5 minutes for halloween

ascendance of a bookworm season 1 - slow, dull isekai about learning to make a book (not write a book. make a book) until it suddenly gets political in the last couple episodes. can't decide if it's worth continuing tbh

my dress up darling - i watched the first two episodes in a dark room with strangers and it felt like a soft core porn showing but for kids ??

mushoku tensei: jobless reincarnation season 1 - damn this for having good animation and actually decent pacing because this was gross and i wanted to give it a garbage rating

horimiya - cute romance but i forgot everything about it

Oohh flashback to the very start of the band.

Ah, so it was Karasawa that totally changed their way of singing and their style. It made them more successful sure but it’s in no way how they wanted to perform and share their own music.

“What are you talking about? Go screw yourself!” Yeah girl, you tell him!

They really were struggling though, picking hp so many jobs just to stay in Tokyo and hold gigs that never fully sold out. No wonder Nanami took the offer, just a shame it was because they needed money and not because Karasawa was actually gonna let them do as they please.

No way in hell I’d wear such outfits.

Their popularity skyrocketed yet Nanami’s cheerful spirit basically vanished. She ain’t fond of these changes at all.

So Nanami didn’t know Eiko was also trying for the 100,000 likes project? I dunno why I thought she did this whole time.

This is the first full song Nino sings in the Anonymous Noise anime/manga. Something about how messy it sounds really stuck with me and I am just living for these vibes. I know rock music totally plays against the aesthetic I have going but I want so badly to one day sing this song.

Oh boy! I have a long, long list of books, movies, tv shows, anime, manga, and light novels that I toss around as recommendations to friends. I usually like to tailor my reccs based on what I know people like but since I'm not entirely sure about your tastes I'll give a few of the ones I know most poeple enjoy.

Oscar (1991): a movie with Sylvester Stalone and it's a comedy so you really can't go wrong with this

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun: either the manga or anime, both are amazing imo and the comedy is unparalleled

Summertime Rendering: honestly the best mystery manga I've ever read and it got a boppin anime adaptation just this year, go in with as few spoilers as possible

Pandora Hearts: please read this manga, if not for the plot then just for the art because Mochizuki Jun improves so much over the course of this series and it's absolutely stunning

86 eighty-six: watch the anime and if you're feeling it read the light novel or just wait it out for a second season because this will definitely get one

2.43 Seiin Koukou Danshi Volleyball: okay so I know this is the less popular volleyball anime but I like this one more

IDOLiSH7: i love these idol boys and this is the best idol game turned anime adaptation out there I think

IDOLY PRIDE: the other really awesome idol anime, I love this more than words can say and it's just a good time all around

Ao no Exorcist: read the manga and just avoid the anime please, the manga is much better

Fruits Basket: I watched the 2019 series and I didn't know what I was getting into at all but damn it was worth it, this anime is perfect

Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru: I clearly like a lot of sports anime lol, but nah this one is good and has like warm and fuzzy friendship vibes but an older cast so it's a bit more serious

Kono Oto Tomare: music anime about a traditional Japanese instrument with great friendship and romance, I loved this so much that I bought the CD and I will one day play it for my wedding

Ya Boy Kongming: it's got great music and is hilarious, you could not ask for more imo

The Raven Boys: this was a fun time to read, like it had friendship and romance and all that teenage angst but also treasure hunting and supernatural powers

Percy Jackson: someone has probably already recced this tbh

All Our Yesterdays: the only valid time travel novel imo

Here Lies Daniel Tate: there's murder, there's mystery, what more could you want lol

The Devil is A Part-timer: watch season 1 of the anime and if you want to continue past that hit me up because things get messy and your enjoyment will depend on which character was your fave

The Last Fallen Star: a korean mythology middle grade novel

Into The Spiderverse: do I need to say more lol

The Good Place: again a comedy tv show, I do love comedy

Gilmore Girls: this is honestly a fascinating study in character development and writing

Ms Marvel: as a pakistani muslim this tv show was a mood in many ways

Manga the Week of 10/6/21

SEAN: October! Time for scary manga!

MICHELLE: Scary manga and super creeps?

SEAN: Airship has, in print, Monster Musume The Novel – Monster Girls on the Job!, a spinoff of the popular monster girl manga series.

We also get an early digital release for Accomplishments of the Duke’s Daughter 3.

Dark Horse has the 7th Gantz omnibus.

Denpa gives us a 4th volume of Pleasure & Corruption.

Ghost Ship debuts Do You Like Big Girls? (Ookii Onnanoko wa Daisuki Desu ka?), a series that runs in Takeshobo’s Kissca, and combines ‘volleyball manga’ and ‘borderline porn’… well, OK, the porn is like 5/6 of it, the volleyball 1/6. But at least it’s all consensual, that’s a plus.

ASH: That is a plus!

SEAN: Also from Ghost Ship is SUPER HXEROS 4. This actually jumped from Seven Seas’ main label to Ghost Ship before the last volume, so presumably the sexual content also bumped up.

ASH: Sometimes you don’t know where a series is going to go until it goes there.

SEAN: J-Novel Club has lots of stuff, including 3 titles that should have been on last week’s list, apologies, the month change confused me. J-Novel Pulp’s John Sinclair: Demon Hunter 4, The Magician Who Rose From Failure 3, and Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire 2.

As for actual next week stuff, for manga there’s Der Werwolf 3 and Marginal Operation 9.

For light novels, we get Are You Okay With a Slightly Older Girlfriend? 5, Cooking with Wild Game 14, Holmes of Kyoto 6, In Another World with My Smartphone 23, Infinite Dendrogram 15, Monster Tamer 6, and She’s the Cutest… But We’re Just Friends! 2.

Kodansha has print manga for us. There’s Boys Run the Riot 3, Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card 10, Orient 5, Rent-a-Girlfriend 9, That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime 17, and Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku 5.

ASH: Boys Run the Riot has been great so far. I’m really looking forward to reading more of Wotakoi, too; it seems like it’s been awhile.

SEAN: DUNGEON DIVE: Aim for the Deepest Level (Isekai Meikyuu no Saishinbu o Mezasou) is an isekai manga from Overlap’s Comic Gardo. Based on an (unlicensed) light novel, its premise is the same as any other manga with ‘isekai’ and ‘dungeon’ in the title.

Headhunted to Another World: From Salaryman to Big Four! (Salaryman ga Isekai ni Ittara Shitennou ni Natta Hanashi) is an isekai manga from Overlap’s Comic Gardo. Not based on a light novel, it has a salaryman summoned by the demon lord to keep her minions in line. This seems like a comedy.

Hitomi-chan is Shy With Strangers (Hitomi-chan wa Hito Mishiri) is NOT an isekai manga from Comic Gardo. This runs in Akita Shoten’s Manga Cross, and seems to be their attempt to do Komi Can’t Communicate with the serial numbers filed off.

Time Stop Hero (Jikan Teishi Yuusha – Yomei 3-ka no Settei ja Sekai o Sukuu ni wa Mijika Sugiru) is an isekai manga from Kodansha’s Shonen Sirius, which seems to combine the subtleties of isekai series with the sensitive and caring aspects of the 1982 sex comedy “Zapped!” starring Scott Baio.

SEAN: And we have ongoing series. The Ancient Magus’ Bride 15, The Demon Girl Next Door 4, How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord 12, Kageki Shojo!! 2, Level 1 Demon Lord and One Room Hero 2, the third and final volume of Rainbow and Black, and Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs 2.

ASH: Oh, there’s a few ongoing series here that i’m reading; I better get ready!

MICHELLE: I could go for some The Ancient Magus’ Bride.

SEAN: Tokyopop gives us Laughing Under the Clouds 4.

Viz gives us one debut, a Shojo Beat title from Betsuma. My Love Mix-Up! (Kieta Hatsukoi) features a new author but the artist is the one who did My Love Story!!. Guy likes girl, but she seems to like another guy. What’s more, the other guy now thinks that HE likes him. Bisexuality ahoy!

ASH: My Love Story!! is a favorite of mine, in part because of the artwork, so I’m definitely planning on giving this one a try.

MICHELLE: Ooh.

ANNA: Unsurprisingly, me too!

SEAN: Viz has a new My Hero Academia: School Briefs light novel, the 5th in the series. It seems to take place right after the My Villain Academia arc (though is about the heroes, of course).

We also get Blue Exorcist 26, Chainsaw Man 7, Jujutsu Kaisen 12, Moriarty the Patriot 5, One-Punch Man 23, Seraph of the End 22, Spy x Family 6, We Never Learn 18, and Yona of the Dawn 32.

ASH: Solid showing from Viz this coming week.

SEAN: Lastly, there’s Yen Press, who moved a lot of September stuff to October. Yen On’s debut is The Undead King’s Reign of Peace (Fusetsu no Fushiou no Saiseiki), the story of a girl saved by the undead king, a powerful skeleton. (See, more skeletons in light novels.) Sadly, while he wants peace for all, most everyone wants him dead.

ASH: I don’t mind the skeleton trend, honestly.

what’s your otp for your muse?

Definitely Liu Shan x Xingcai. The potential chemistry they have, professional and platonic and romantic, is very exciting for me. I like to think they are a couple that will explore each other as their relationship progresses, along the way revealing facets about themselves that they have never shown before. Which basically means in my case that I can make them do almost anything and it can be believable. For me writing a fanfic for those two, that helps a lot.

what are you willing to rp when it comes to shipping?

Pretty much ANYTHING! I like all sorts of ships, platonic, romantic, sexual, fobidden, hateful, acquaintainships, political, WHATEVER springs to mind. And even then, these relationships with other muses aren’t always set in stone. Liu Shan changes ever so slightly in my mind as I write him and as a result he can switch moods with the same person. Heck, I’ve done it in a thread before!

are you selective when shipping?

I am completely unselective when it comes to shipping with very few exceptions, that being ships that I find abusive. Sure I play along with some of the more ���popular’ non-canon interpretations of Liu Shan like how he’s some secret BDSM masochist but those are usually as jokes. Don’t get me wrong I don’t want to discourage writing about abuse as I think it needs more exposure and I certainly do hint at it sometimes but if I do it, there’s usually some moral/story point to it. Abuse for the hell of it? No thanks.

Outside of that, I really am not selective. Each muse has some potential chemistry with my muse and it all just boils down to “do I think Liu Shan will take this relationship one step further?” and the answer really does vary.

You whip the genitals out and do the helicopter, that’s pretty much NSFW, that’s what I say. No but seriously, though my previous statement is MY opinion on what NSFW is, I understand a lot of people in this fandom think it is something far milder than that so I usually put the Read more when the clothing is about to come off or the more ‘inappropriate’ thoughts begin to arise.

Well it seems I am famously known for my ships with @perfumednightingale and @nobleconsort. Yueliang and Zhen Huan—from the two blogs mentioned respectively—are as different as can be, fire and ice, sweet and bitter. And yet Liu Shan has some rather sexual relationships with both these women (thank god not at the same time that’d be terrifying) and after reading my first threads with these two, ironically they both start out the same way: Liu Shan revealing his true self and his true intentions to these two women whom he connects to for reasons he has yet to understand.

I personally will always be a fan of the interactions with @professor-goodwitch and the ever-awesome Bacon with @cutthroathero/ @zhuge-kongming/ whatever they’re doing now. Those two helped me settle into this RP fandom and I always treasure the silly, crazy situations they have with each other. Liu Shan will always care for them, albeit in the way a roommate cares that their other roommates don’t trash the house while he’s gone.

I should also talk about the more mellow ships, the ones that may not get much attention and that goes to @oath-of-three-arrows, @heavenssoaringwings and @severemarquis for kinda but not really putting up with Liu Shan. Whether it be as friends or as enemies or as acquaintainces, they all have a special relationship with Liu Shan that will probably never change or grow into more than what it is but that’s still alright in my books.

does one have to ask to ship with you?

HELL no! You can just make a thread and suddenly Liu Shan’s, like, in love with you and I’ll be cool with it. Just, uh...if you’re gonna try and manipulate my character’s point of view at least keep it believably how I write him.

how often do you like to ship?

Every now and again, I’m not picky but I also don’t really feel the need to seek it out nowadays. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll ALWAYS be waiting for another Xingcai to whisk me (read: Liu Shan) off my feet with their strong yet feminine arms but until that time comes, I’ll just sit and wait.

are you multiship?

Don’t get me wrong, I have threads with Yueliang and Zhen Huan and I love them to pieces but they are technically non-canon. Out of the canon characters in DW, I cannot imagine Liu Shan falling for anyone else other than Xingcai. I’m multiship when it comes to crossover muses or muses outside of the canon but inside the DW canon itself, Liu Shan x Xingcai will be my OTP fo sho

are you ship obsessed or ship more-or-less?

Honestly, Liu Shan x Xingcai is the only ship I’m ship obsessed with. For every other fandom I’m in, I’m pretty OK with whatever ship’s popular and I’m pretty OK with whatever fanart or fanfics there are—however little they may be for some fandoms. But Liu Shan x Xingcai? Oh GOD you can’t believe the amount of times I ended up squealing because SOMEONE ELSE OTHER THAN ME posted stuff about those two. Doesn’t even have to be romantic or anything, just SOMETHING about those two.

It doesn’t help that a lot of fanfics in the Dynasty Warriors section usually make Liu Shan a scapegoat by villainising him to legitimise Xingcai’s romantic relationship with someone else in their fic. Like, I’d be fine if it’s one of those one-sided things and he lets her go but forcing her to marry and later RAPE her is not only COMPLETELY out of character but it sucks for fans of his character like me. It also reduces the likelihood of other fics about the two because other people may be scared. Hence why I’m writing one currently. If no one else will make the content, I guess I’ll have to do it.

what is your favorite ship in your current fandom?

Read above. Lol, but outside of those two, I kinda like the Qiaos and their respective husbands, it’s very cute. Recently, I’ve liked this very specific relationship between Liu Bei and Sun Shangxiang that they loved each other but it kinda mellows out to this strained but trusting relationship. Also, it helps if Sun Shangxiang stays in Shu to adopt the role as Liu Shan’s mother so I have another reason to explain why Liu Shan is attracted to dominant women. (Not that he won’t become the dominant one in the bed room, wink wink)
